Ladi Kwali, the first and only woman to appear on Nigerian currency: twenty-naira note
Ladi Dosei Kwali (1924 - 1984) is the first and only woman to appear on Nigerian currency: her portrait is on the back of the twenty-naira note.
Ladi was the pioneer of modern pottery in Nigeria. Her first name means "born on Sunday" while her second name is the name of her hometown. She born to Gbagyi parents in the village of Kwali, located in the Gwari region of present-day Abuja, where pottery used to be a common occupation among women.
Kwali grew up in a family in which the womenfolk made pots for a living. She first came to learn Gwari pottery-making as an apprentice to her aunt, who taught her the Gwarin Yamma techniques of coil and pinch methods of pottery.
With help from the famed English studio potter, Michael Cardew (Baban Shaku) who had helped launched the Abuja Pottery Training Centre along with Kwali in 1952 and spent the following fifteen years teaching, Kwali came to international prominence for her talents in the 1950s. Prior to the Centre's launch, Kwali had worked as a professional potter, as well as trading and running a shop in Minna, Niger State.
The Emir of Abuja at the time, Alhaji Suleiman Barau, was so enchanted by the exquisite charm and beauty of her work that he bought many of her pieces for his collection. It was during a visit to his palace that Cardew first noticed her works and encouraged her to join the centre.
When she joined the pottery centre in 1954 as its first woman potter, Kwali was trained in new methods taught there. She became famous for her experimental and innovative works merging the Gwari style she was proficient at with the modern techniques, creating glazed dishes, bowls and beakers, with stylised animal sgraffito. These are the works for which she is best known and they were a great asset to the growth in the popularity of Abuja pottery outside Africa.
Through Kwali's contact with Cardew, she and her work became known in Europe and America and she became a very popular member of the Centre's touring lecture team of the Centre. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, her work was shown to great acclaim in London at the Berkeley Galleries. Kwali remained associated with the Abuja Pottery Training Centre works until her death. She gave lectures and demonstrations at home and abroad on her craft for the duration of her career.
The Abuja Training Pottery Centre was renamed the Ladi Kwali Pottery Centre, and major roads in Abuja and Niger State are named after her.
She received a number of other honours in her lifetime. She was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1963 and was awarded an honorary degree byAhmadu Bello University in 1977. Her pottery was also displayed during Nigeria's independence celebrations in 1960. In 1980, the Nigerian Government invested her with the insignia of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA), the highest national honour for academic achievement.
Following the death of Cardew in 1983, Kwali died on August 12, 1984 at the age of 59 in Minna, leaving a great legacy in her work.

Mark Zuckerberg lashes back at Trump's "Facebook is anti-trump" claim
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg lashes back at President Donald Trump tweet on Wednesday morning, after he criticized the social network.
In a post on Facebook, Mark said the claims of Trump are the opposite of what liberals and the media argued following his election.
“Trump says Facebook is against him. Liberals say we helped Trump. Both sides are upset about ideas and content they don't like. That's what running a platform for all ideas looks like," he wrote.
Mark's response came on the same day that Facebook, Google, and Twitter have been asked to testify before Congress on November 1st, where they’ll face questions about Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and how it might have used their platforms to spread misinformation in an attempt to influence the outcome.
But he admitted he had underestimated the impact of misinformation on the election.
“After the election, I made a comment that I thought the idea misinformation on Facebook changed the outcome of the election was a crazy idea,” he wrote. “Calling that crazy was dismissive and I regret it. This is too important an issue to be dismissive.

He listed the positive impacts of the site during the election – including get out the vote efforts and the fact that every candidate had a page to promote their own ideas and interact directly with voters and added that facebook is under intense pressure to do more to help stop the spread of “fake news”.
Uganda passes Presidential Age Limit Removal Bill
Uganda parliament in a heated session on Tuesday made their first move towards the removal of presidential age limit in favour of the 5times elected President Yoweri Museveni 73, who is ineligible to stand in the next polls in 2021 in accordance with the existing constitution which states that a person standing for president must be under 75 years of age.
This move triggered widespread opposition from civil rights activists and religious leaders, university students, as opposition politicians were seen brawling for a second consecutive day.
Tension escalated in parliament for the second day over the debate, backed by members of Museveni's National Resistance Movement (NRM) party as punches were thrown and benches clambered over which resulted to the barring of 25 legislators by Speaker Rebecca Kadaga after engaging in another brawl on the same issue on Tuesday.
Despite the disagreements, the bill was passed after the leader of the parliamentary opposition, Winnie Kiiza of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), led a walk-out.
China orders the shut down of North Korean companies in the country
Following the UN sanctions over Pyongyang’s latest nuclear missile tests, Chinese Government have ordered North Korean companies in the country to shut down by January.
China’s ministry of commerce said today that North Korean firms and joint ventures firms in China will be shut within 120 days of the UN decision, which was announced on 12 September.
Beijing had previously ordered banks to stop working with the North Korean regime following US concerns the Chinese government wasn’t being tough enough on the North Korean nuclear threat.
China is North Korea’s main ally and trading partner, responsible for around 90 percent of the hermit nation's commerce. making the success of UN sanctions dependent upon Beijing’s cooperation, and the latest sanctions are a clear indication of China’s growing frustration at Kim Jong Un’s regime.
Founder of Playboy, Hugh Hefner dies at 91 in Los Angeles
Founder of Playboy magazine, Hugh Hefner, on Wednesday died at age 91 at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones, as stated by the magazine.
Playboy Mansion also known as the Playboy Mansion West was the former home of Hugh Hefner. In Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, California, near Beverly Hills, the mansion became famous during the 1970s through media reports of Hefner's lavish parties.
Hefner was an American magazine publisher, editor, businessman, and playboy. He was best known as the editor-in-chief and publisher of Playboy magazine, which he founded in 1953. He was also the founder and chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, the publishing group that operates the magazine. Hefner was also a political activist and philanthropist in several causes and public issues. He was born in 1929, April 9.

Serena Williams 35, who recently gave birth to a girl called Alexis Olympia Ohanian wrote a touching letter to her mum.
Dear Mom,
You are one of the strongest women I know. I was looking at my daughter (OMG, yes, I have a daughter 😳) and she has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body. I don't know how I would react if she has to go through what I've gone through since I was a 15 year old and even to this day.
I've been called man because I appeared outwardly strong. It has been said that that I use drugs (No, I have always had far too much integrity to behave dishonestly in order to gain an advantage). It has been said I don't belong in Women's sports -- that I belong in Men's -- because I look stronger than many other women do. (No, I just work hard and I was born with this badass body and proud of it).
But mom, I'm not sure how you did not go off on every single reporter, person, announcer and quite frankly, hater, who was too ignorant to understand the power of a black woman.
I am proud we were able to show them what some women look like. We don't all look the same. We are curvy, strong, muscular, tall, small, just to name a few, and all the same: we are women and proud!
You are so classy, I only wish I could take your lead. I am trying, though, and God is not done with me yet. I have a LONG way to go, but thank you.
Thank you for being the role model I needed to endure all the hardships that I now regard as a challenges--ones that I enjoy. I hope to teach my baby Alexis Olympia the same, and have the same fortitude you have had.
Promise me, Mom, that you will continue to help. I'm not sure if I am as meek and strong as you are yet. I hope to get there one day. I love you dearly.

Fellow Heads of State and Government
Mr. Secretary-General
Distinguished Delegates
Ladies and Gentlemen
On behalf of my country, Nigeria, I congratulate you Mr. President on your election and Mr. Gutteres on his first General Assembly outing as our Secretary-General. I assure you both of my country’s solidarity and cooperation. You will indeed need the cooperation of all member States as we are meeting during extra-ordinarily troubled and dangerous times. Let me also thank former Secretary-General Mr. Ban ki Moon for his service to the United Nations and wish him peaceful retirement.
*The previous year has witnessed many far-reaching developments. Some of the most significant events include the Iran Nuclear Deal, the Paris Climate Change Agreement and, of grave concern, the North Korean nuclear crisis.
*I must also commend the UN’s role in helping to settle thousands of innocent civilians caught in the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. In particular, we must collectively thank the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany under the commendable leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Governments of Italy, Greece and Turkey for assisting hundreds of thousands of refugees.
*In an exemplary show of solidarity, the international community came together within my own region to assist the countries and communities in the Sahel and the Lake Chad regions to contain the threats posed by Al Qaida and Boko Haram.
*We thank the Security Council for visiting the countries of the Lake Chad Basin to assess the security situation and humanitarian needs, and for pledging assistance to rebuild lives and livelihoods. Indeed, in Nigeria we are providing relief and humanitarian assistance to millions in camps and those afflicted by terrorism, drought, floods and other natural disasters.
*In the last year, the international community came together to focus on the need for gender equality, youth empowerment, social inclusion, and the promotion of education, creativity and innovation. The frontiers of good governance, democracy including holding free and fair elections, and enthronement of the rule of law are expanding everywhere, especially in Africa.
* Our faith in democracy remains firm and unshaken. Our regional organisation ECOWAS came together to uphold democratic principles in The Gambia – as we had done previously in Cote D’Ivoire.
* Through our individual national efforts, state institutions are being strengthened to promote accountability, and to combat corruption and asset recovery. These can only be achieved through the international community cooperating and providing critical assistance and material support. We shall also cooperate in addressing the growing transnational crimes such as forced labour, modern day slavery, human trafficking and cybercrime.
* These cooperative efforts should be sustained. We must collectively devise strategies and mobilise the required responses to stop fleeing ISIS fighters from mutating and infiltrating into the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, where there are insufficient resources and response capacity is weak.
* This will require strong UN cooperation with regional organisations, such as the African Union, in conflict prevention and management. The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the maintenance of international peace and security by providing, in a predictable and sustainable manner, adequate funding and other enablers to regional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the Security Council.
* New conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing unresolved old conflicts. For example, several UN Security Council Resolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of Gaza continue.
* Additionally, we are now confronted by the desperate human rights and humanitarian situations in Yemen and most tragically in the Rakhine State of Myanmar. The Myanmar crisis is very reminiscent of what happened in Bosnia in 1995 and in Rwanda in 1994.
* The international community cannot remain silent and not condemn the horrendous suffering caused by what, from all indications is a state-backed programme of brutal depopulation of the Rohingya inhabited areas in Myanmar on the bases of ethnicity and religion. We fully endorse the call by the Secretary-General on the Government of Myanmar to order a halt to the ongoing ethnic cleansing and ensure the safe return of the displaced Rohingya to their homes in safety and dignity.
* In all these crises, the primary victims are the people, the most vulnerable being women and children. That is why the theme of this session: Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet" is most apposite.
* While the international community grapples to resolve these conflicts, we must be mindful and focus on the widening inequalities within societies, and the gap between the rich and the poor nations. These inequalities and gaps are part of the underlining root causes of competition for resources, frustration and anger leading to spiralling instability.
*The most pressing threat to international peace and security today is the accelerated nuclear weapons development programme by North Korea. Since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962, we have never come so close to the threat of nuclear war as we have now.
* All necessary pressure and diplomatic efforts must be brought to bear on North Korea to accept peaceful resolution of the crisis. As Hiroshima and Nagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic and devastating human loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined.
* Nigeria proposes a strong UN delegation to urgently engage the North Korean Leader. The delegation, led by the Security Council, should include members from all the regions.
* The crisis in the Korean peninsula underscores the urgency for all member states, guided by the spirit of enthroning a safer and more peaceful world, to ratify without delay the Treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons, which will be open for signature here tomorrow.
* I end my remarks by reiterating Nigeria’s abiding commitment to the foundational principles and goals of the United Nations. Since our admission as a member state in 1960, we have always participated in all efforts to bring about global peace, security and development. Nigeria will continue to support the UN in all its efforts, including the attainment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

More than 100 world leaders, thousands of diplomats and advocates will convene in New York City for the 72nd United Nations General Assembly Debate from 19-25 September 2017. This year’s theme is “Focusing on people — striving for peace and a decent life for all on a sustainable planet”.
World leaders will take their turn at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly Hall on Tuesday as the general debate gets underway in New York.

ASUU: Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities Suspends Strike
Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU, yesterday, Monday,18th September, officially suspended its one month, six days strike at a meeting with Federal Government delegation.
After the meeting which ended at about 8:30pm, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, President of ASUU , stated the position of the union. He said that the Union was suspending the strike till end of October for government to fulfill its pledges.
University lecturers are to resume duty from Tuesday.

HURRICANE: Hurricane Irma hits the Caribbean
In the struggle to recover from the scourge of the Hurricane Harvey, another life-threatening Hurricane has hit states and territory of the U.S
A dangerous Category 5 storm Hurricane Irma on Tuesday roared toward the northeast Caribbean on a path that could take it to the United States.
Irma considered as one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic, hit the eastern Caribbean, with island of Barbuda been the first to bear the brunt on Wednesday with winds of up to 185 miles an hour. It churned toward Puerto Rico, threatening havoc and destruction on the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Cuba is also threatened.With buildings destroyed, British tourists are evacuated from the region.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center said Irma had sustained winds of 175mph (280 kph) and was centered about 270 miles (440 kilometers) east of Antigua. It was moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).
President Trump declared a state of emergency in Florida, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. The storm is expected to reach Florida on Sunday, potentially causing catastrophic flooding.
There have been at least one death in Anguilla, a British territory and also two confirmed deaths in the French Caribbean, President Emmanuel Macron of France says there will be “victims to lament.”

Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, on behalf of President Buhari today, visited victims of the flood disaster in Makurdi, the Benue State capital to assess the situation.
The flood victims were assured of the Federal Government's support by Yemi Osinbajo on behalf of the President in a post on Twitter.

"The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting for you.” Malala charged Aung San Suu Kyi
The inhumane treatment of the Rohingyas Muslims in Buddhist majority Myanmar has tarnished the image of Myanmar’s civilian leader and Nobel peace prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, once a famously unflinching defender of human rights and darling of the West. These violence has been considered as one of the biggest challenges Aung San Suu Kyi's government will face.
Following the ongoing episodes of violence against Rohingya Muslim in Myanmar last month, more than 90,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh. Death toll will inevitably rise after Myanmar, blocked UN agencies from delivering vital food, water and medicine supplies to 250,000 Rakhine residents desperately in need.
Pakistani Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai in her tweet on september 3, urged Aung San Suu Kyi to condemn the horrific condition of the Rohingya muslims.
She wrote: “Over the last several years, I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment.
“I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same. The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May demands urgent sanctions on North Korea after nuclear test
After the powerful nuclear test conducted by North Korea, Ms May said in an e-mailed statement, "This latest action by North Korea is reckless and poses an unacceptable further threat to the international community."
According to Reuters, on Sunday, Sept 3, British Prime Minister Theresa May said the United Nations Security Council should urgently look at imposing new sanctions on North Korea and speed up implementation of existing ones.
Pyongyang conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test earlier on Sunday.
"I discussed the serious and grave threat these dangerous and illegal actions present with President Abe in Japan this week and reiterate the call we jointly made for tougher action, including increasing the pace of implementation of existing sanctions and looking urgently in the UN Security Council at new measures."

According to close friends, Hector, father of one, had gone out, earlier Saturday morning to pick a relative from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos State, suggesting that he was trailed from the airport to his house in Lagos, where the horrible crime was committed.
Eyewitnesses report that two men had forcibly gained entrance into the compound where Hector lived and questioned a few residents for his deceased whereabouts, after which upon sighting him, shot him.
US plans to sever "All trading" ties with countries doing business with North Korea
Following the latest nuclear test of Pyongyang, President Trump of the United States on Sunday, raised the possibility of taking new actions targeting North Korea via his account on twitter.
"The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea." he tweets..
He said he would be meeting with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, White House chief of staff John F. Kelly and other military leaders to discuss options.

SPORTS: Serena Williams and partner Reditt welcomes a baby girl
The 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams, and her partner, Reditt co-founder Alexis Ohanian welcomed a baby girl at a clinic in Florida yesterday, 1st September, 2017.
35 years old Williams, was admitted to the St Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach on aid last month she was planning to return to tennis for the Australian Open in January.
Her sister excitements knew no bound. "Words can't describe it." Venus said..
Another grand slam winner has been born.... Congratulations Serena...
